Termite Damage – Do I need to worry about it in winter?

termite damage

As winter arrives, many Brisbane homeowners breathe a sigh of relief, thinking that the colder temperatures will provide a temporary respite from pests, including termites. However, contrary to popular belief, termite damage is a concern even during the winter months. In fact, the colder weather can drive these destructive critters indoors, so you need to remain vigilant and book a termite inspection if you have any suspicious looking activity. Termites have developed ingenious ways to survive during the winter months and continue their destructive activities undeterred.

One of the most common termite species found in Australia is the subterranean termite. These tenacious pests build intricate underground colonies, constructing mud tubes that provide protection and moisture. During winter, these termites can move closer to human habitation, seeking warmth and a readily available food source – the wooden structures of homes. As temperatures drop, termites actively seek refuge indoors. They can find their way into your home through cracks, gaps, or even small openings in the foundation. Once inside, termites can wreak havoc on the structural integrity of your property, often undetected until significant termite damage has already occurred.

Signs to look out for are

  • Mud tubes: termites construct these pencil-sized tunnels as protective pathways between their nests and food sources.
  • Swarmers: Winged termites, also known as swarmers, emerge in search of mates and new locations to establish colonies. Spotting these swarmers, especially indoors, indicates an active termite presence.
  • Wood damage: Check for hollowed or damaged wood, blistering paint, or unexplained cracks in wooden structures.

If you do find signs of termite activity, DON’T try to get rid of them yourself! Call us in to handle it for you – this is a job that really does need a professional. DIY solutions just aren’t strong enough or far reaching enough to eradicate termites.

Of course prevention is better (and way less expensive) than cure when it comes to termite damage. Regular termite inspections are essential – book yours in now!
