Spiders are common in Queensland homes. Most are completely harmless. A few aren't. And most people would rather not share their space with any of them.
Know Your Pest
Queensland has hundreds of spider species. Most that you'll encounter indoors pose no risk at all. The ones worth being aware of are listed below.
One of the most recognisable spiders in Australia. Glossy black with a distinctive red or orange stripe on the abdomen. Redbacks build irregular, low to the ground webs in dark sheltered spots: letterboxes, under garden furniture, in garages and storage areas, and in outdoor furniture. Bites are painful and require medical attention. Antivenom is available.
Found in Brisbane's western suburbs and hinterland areas where moist, sheltered soil is present. Highly venomous. One of the most dangerous spiders in the world. Funnel webs burrow in moist soil near rockeries, garden beds and retaining walls close to the house. They do not build traditional webs. Males wander during warmer months and may enter homes. If bitten, call 000 immediately.
Large, flat bodied, fast moving and entirely harmless. Huntsmans are probably the spider most likely to alarm Brisbane homeowners. They enter homes seeking warmth or prey, often turning up unexpectedly on walls and ceilings. They do not build webs and are not territorial. Despite their size and speed, they pose no danger to humans.
Slender, dark brown body with a white tip at the end of the abdomen. White tails are found indoors, particularly in bedrooms and bathrooms, where they hunt other spiders. They do not build webs. Their venom is mild and most bites cause only localised redness and irritation. The historical claim that white tails cause necrotic wounds has not been supported by medical research.
Dark grey to black, builds a distinctive funnel shaped web in corners, window frames, door frames and eaves. Very common in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast homes. Not dangerous. They tend to stay in the same web for extended periods, meaning populations can build up in undisturbed corners. Regular treatment reduces numbers significantly.
The most common spider found indoors throughout Queensland. Extremely thin legs, small pale body, builds loose irregular webs in ceiling corners. Completely harmless to humans. Daddy long legs are active predators of other spiders, including redbacks, which makes them useful to have around. Despite popular myth, they are not dangerously venomous. Their venom is simply very weak.
Our Approach
Spider treatment involves a thorough internal and external spray of the property, targeting the areas where webbing spiders build their webs and where spiders are most likely to enter from outside.
A note on huntsmans and funnel webs: These species are less susceptible to residual spray than webbing spiders. For huntsmans, treatment reduces their prey (other insects), which encourages them to move on. Physical removal is the most effective immediate measure. For funnel webs, we treat likely burrowing areas and advise on habitat removal, but active burrows should be handled with care. Physical removal by a professional is the safest approach.
Our Guarantee
Every spider treatment we carry out is backed by a 12-month internal warranty. If covered spider species return inside your property within 12 months of treatment, we will return and re-treat at no charge.
The warranty covers spiders returning inside the property: inside your home and any internal spaces we treated. It does not cover external webbing spiders on garden fences, outdoor structures, or eaves that fall outside the treated zone. These are part of the normal outdoor environment on any Queensland property and cannot be warranted.
