Brisbane homeowners deal with two very different cockroach problems. German cockroaches live and breed inside your kitchen. American cockroaches come in from outside. One spray does not fix both. Understanding the difference is the first step to getting rid of them.
They Are Not the Same Problem
When people call about cockroaches, the first thing we ask is: are they small ones in the kitchen, or big ones near the drains? The answer changes the entire approach.
German cockroaches and American cockroaches have different biology, different nesting behaviour, and respond to different treatments. A general surface spray might knock back American cockroaches for a few weeks. The same spray on a German cockroach infestation will make things worse. Not better. Worse.
Here is how to tell them apart and why it matters.
How to Tell Them Apart
German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)
- Small: 10 to 15mm long
- Pale tan or light brown colour
- Two parallel dark stripes running behind the head down the back
- Wings are present but German cockroaches rarely fly
- Found indoors: kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances, inside dishwashers
- Active at night, often seen on benchtops and inside cupboards
- Breed extremely fast: one female can produce up to 400 offspring in her lifetime
American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
- Large: 35 to 40mm long (sometimes bigger)
- Reddish brown colour with a pale yellow band just behind the head
- Fully winged and capable of flying
- Primarily an outdoor species that moves between drains, sewer systems, and subfloor voids
- Enters homes via drains, weep holes, and gaps under doors at night
- Often found in bathrooms, laundries, and near floor level
- Reproduces more slowly than German cockroaches
German Cockroaches: The Indoor Breeder
German cockroaches live their entire life cycle indoors. They harbour in warm, humid, narrow spaces close to food and moisture. Behind the fridge motor, in the door seal of the dishwasher, inside electrical switchboards, under the range hood, in the hinges of kitchen cupboards. These are not places you can spray and call done.
The reason German cockroaches are so difficult to get rid of is their breeding speed. A single female produces an egg case containing 30 to 40 eggs roughly every six weeks. By the time you spot them running across the bench at night, there is already a large population hiding in the harbourage points.
They also carry bacteria and shed allergens. German cockroaches are a documented trigger for asthma, particularly in children. A kitchen infestation is a hygiene and health issue, not just an inconvenience.
Why Spray Does Not Work on German Cockroaches
This is where a lot of homeowners go wrong.
Most surface sprays and supermarket products are repellent based. When a cockroach detects the chemical, it moves away from the treated surface. With German cockroaches living inside wall voids and appliance motors, spraying the bench or skirting boards simply drives them deeper into the structure. The population does not reduce. It scatters.
Do not spray German cockroaches with a surface spray. Repellent chemicals scatter the population into harder to reach areas and make treatment more difficult. This includes most over the counter sprays and aerosol products.
The correct treatment for German cockroaches is gel bait. A professional grade gel bait is applied as small dots inside harbourage points: behind the fridge, inside appliance cavities, in door hinges, and in any crack or gap the cockroaches are using as a refuge. The cockroaches feed on the bait, return to the colony, and transfer it to other individuals through feeding and droppings. The entire population is eliminated over several weeks, including egg cases the spray would never reach.
The bait placement is the critical part. Supermarket bait stations exist, but they are rarely placed in the right locations in sufficient quantity. A professional service treats every harbourage point in the kitchen and bathroom, not just the obvious spots.
American Cockroaches: Coming From Outside
American cockroaches do not live in your kitchen cupboards. They come from sewers, drains, subfloor voids, compost heaps, and the ground around your property. Brisbane's ageing sewer infrastructure and our warm weather create ideal conditions for large American cockroach populations in the drainage network.
At night, especially after rain or when conditions underground become unfavourable, they move. They enter homes through floor drains, broken drain seals, weep holes in brickwork, and any gap at floor level. You find them in the bathroom, laundry, or kitchen floor, usually running when you switch the light on.
Treating American Cockroaches
Because American cockroaches are coming from outside, the treatment focuses on the perimeter and entry points. A professional treatment includes:
- A residual spray to the external perimeter of the building, particularly around weep holes, expansion joints, and the base of the walls
- Treatment to the subfloor if one is present
- Drain treatment to reduce the population in the drainage system
- Identification and sealing of entry points where practical
The population around your home can be large. Regular perimeter treatments are the most practical way to keep American cockroaches out.
Why DIY Products Fail
Most supermarket products are designed for a broad market and come with limitations that matter in practice.
For German cockroaches: the sprays are repellent. The bait stations use small quantities of bait in fixed locations, not placed where the cockroaches actually harbour. Without treating every harbourage point, you reduce the visible population but not the actual one.
For American cockroaches: consumer grade products have a shorter residual life and are applied less thoroughly than a professional treatment. The drain network is not addressed at all. Within a few weeks the population outside recovers and entry resumes.
The biology of cockroaches does not care about a quick fix. The treatment has to match the species and the infestation.
